Individual volunteers play a huge role helping to make RMHC® New Zealand a ‘home-away-from-home’ for families. We are always looking for fabulous volunteers to join our team both in the House and in the Family Room.
Please note that due to training and the consistency required in our facilities, we need all our volunteers to commit to a minimum of four hours each fortnight, for a period of six months or more.
House
Our Wellington House provides accommodation for a range of families who are away from home due to medical treatment. The House volunteer role will see you wearing many hats – welcoming families and visitors as they arrive, answering the phone, administrative tasks, housekeeping duties and anything else our small staff team might need support with.
“I’ve been at RMHC New Zealand for approximately 30 years, since it first opened in 1991. I love being with the staff and the families, making sure they have everything they need. I call it the ‘House of love’. I enjoy helping around the House, making sure everything is ‘ticking over nicely’. I help the staff with jobs, for example; making sure the DVD players are working, preparing morning tea when we have a group in, moving beds into rooms and anything else that is asked of me. It’s a great place to volunteer.”

“In 2018 when I found myself volunteering at RMHC New Zealand, I never thought 2 years later, I would have clocked up over 1000 hours of volunteering. The majority of those hours were spent over in the Ronald McDonald Family Room® at Wellington Hospital. I found the Family Room was the perfect place for me to give back and make a positive impact on people’s lives. My favourite part about volunteering in the Family Room is the interaction with families. I found it important to take the time to listen and get to know the families; this allowed me to provide a high level of service and support. One thing I’ve got to say is the whole team in Wellington are amazing, caring and supportive. If you are thinking of volunteering, get in touch with the friendly team, you won’t regret it.”
– Callum Foothead, Family Room Volunteer
“We come into Ronald McDonald House on a Friday and work together in Housekeeping. Between us, we have worked in excess of 1800 hours and we love what we do. Between the 2 of us, we have washed 1000s of sheets and towels and have made up 100s of beds and we help maintain a well-organised laundry. Volunteering and caring for the families staying at the House is such a rewarding experience.”
