Individual Volunteering Auckland

Volunteer with us and play a pivotal role in supporting families with a child in hospital.

There are lots of ways to get involved! Be the friendly face at reception that greets families after a long day at the hospital, provide joy and a welcome distraction to the hospitalised children and their siblings staying at RMHC, by helping make our movie nights or school holiday activities a blast, or support the maintenance of our clean, safe, and homely environment by assisting with general upkeep or housekeeping- and much more!

Please note, you must be 18 years old or above to volunteer and able to make a minimum commitment of 3-6 months.

Choose how you have an impact:

Be a House Hero

Not all heroes wear capes! As a House Hero your role is to assist housekeeping to maintain the high levels of cleanliness that are set at the house. In addition to the tangible effect of a clean and hygienic environment, there is also the intangible effect of helping to create and maintain the safe and homely environment for families. This is a very important role!

House Heroes are needed everyday from 10am – 1pm to help our housekeeping team at both Domain House and Grafton Mews.

As a House Hero your tasks will include:
• Helping collect towels and linen and swap for clean ones.
• Helping with washing/drying laundry
• Helping unpack linen delivery on Monday/Wednesday/Fridays
• Stripping linen in rooms between family stays
• General kitchen tidy

Support our Families

The Ronald McDonald House Family Room is located within the National Children’s Hospital and provides 12 short stay bedrooms for caregivers of critically ill children. In these situations, it is imperative they remain under the same roof as their child. The Family Room also provides a respite for families who are staying with their child on the ward. It is a quiet day lounge to relax and unwind in a calm and friendly space.

As a volunteer in our Family Room, you will regularly be around families struggling with extremely difficult circumstances. Therefore, it is important that you are comfortable working with people during stressful times and that you possess a warm, empathetic nature.

We generally need family support help everyday with 2 shifts available, 10.30am – 1pm or 5pm – 8pm.

As a Family Support volunteer, your tasks will include:
• Keeping the kitchen tidy
• Baking for families
• Helping with lunch service on Wednesdays/Fridays
• General tidying of the room
• Interacting with families and providing a warm welcome

Provide Maintenance Support

As a maintenance volunteer you play a vital role in ensuring the Houses are safe and operational. This role is hands-on and includes leaf blowing, water blasting, cleaning House vehicles, and more skilled jobs if your experience allows.

Maintenance support is needed everyday at both Domain House and Grafton Mews from 9am – 12pm.

Run our Reception

The Domain House can quickly become a hive of activity so it is important to have a team member at the front desk at all times, helping to make families and visitors feel welcome. This is a varied role which involves answering the phones, collecting and distributing mail, booking couriers and taxis, and administration.

We need reception assistance at the Domain House everyday. We have a morning reception shift from 9.30am to 1pm and an evening reception shift from 5pm to 8pm.

Be a Dinner Host

We are fortunate enough to have groups come in and cook dinners for our families as part of our group volunteering dinner programme. As a dinner host you will support our chef in managing the group to ensure a delicious and nutritious meal is served to our families at 6pm. You will ensure that the facilities are left clean and tidy and ready for the next users.

You will have a passion for cooking, be an ambassador for RMHC New Zealand, and have a good understanding of people coordination.

We host dinners at Domain House on Mondays/Wednesdays and Grafton Mews on Tuesdays/Thursdays. We have two host shifts per dinner – 3-5.30pm and 5-8pm.

Support our On-Duty Manager

Volunteering to support our on-duty manager at our Grafton Mews House will mean you are often the first point of contact for everyone arriving. Our duty manager is often busy with families so it is essential we have someone present to provide a warm and welcoming environment, and to assist them until the duty manager is available. A friendly face and a smile works wonders for whanau who often arrive tired and stressed after their journey. This is a crucial role!

At Grafton Mews House we usually  need duty support Monday – Thursday from 5pm – 8pm.

Your tasks will include:
• Greeting families on arrival and signing people in
• Answering the phones and transferring calls to relevant staff/family when needed
• Source equipment/supplies for families and deliver to rooms
• General tidy of kitchen/lounge areas

Food Service Support

The Food Service role is varied, fast paced and perfect for budding or aspiring chefs! You will be on your feet most of your shift and interacting with families as they come and go from the kitchen. You will also get the chance to learn a cooking technique or two from our wonderful chef!

As a food servive volunteer, you provide essential support to our chef by helping to prepare and cook meals, preparing salads, sandwiches and other lunch type meals, individually packaging and labelling meals, clearing kitchen of equipment, washing up and sanitising. You may also help out with baking for families to enjoy at morning tea.

Food service is normally Monday/Tuesday/Thursday from 10am – 12pm.

Host Movie Nights

By volunteering as a Movie Nights Host you are helping us make RMHC Houses a welcoming, friendly place that feels like home for the families of children in hospital. The purpose of Movie Nights is to have a fun activity for the children in the House, and to give the parents/caregivers a break. This is a fun role, where you can get to know the children staying at RMHC.

Movie nights take place fortnightly Tuesdays and Thursdays at Domain House fortnightly Wednesdays at Grafton Mews. Both nights take place from 6pm-8pm.

Help Transport our Families

In this role you will be shuttling families between Grafton Mews and the Hospital, instead of them walking up and down Grafton Road hill (especially in the rain). This service is Monday to Friday with 2 shifts that cover 7.30am – 1pm.

We offer families transport to Countdown supermarket on Tuesdays from 10.30am – 1pm and St Lukes Mall on Thursdays from 10.30am – 1pm, which you could also assist with as a driver.

School Holiday Support

As a school holiday volunteer you will help run activities as part of our school holiday programme. This is a great role if you love to be creative and hands on with kids. We try and run different activities throughout the holidays and we'd love your help – lego buildings, arts and crafts, movies, board games etc

Be an Event Superstar

Throughout the year we hold external and internal events where we require the support of our amazing volunteers. This is an awesome opportunity for you to attend and contribute to our internal events including special in-house dinners such as Matariki and Christmas. Christmas volunteer activities could include decorating and running Santa’s grotto, as well as helping with external Christmas fundraising events.

You will have the chance to let us know your preferences and interests in your application, however please note, all roles are subject to availability.

Hear from our incredible volunteers

"I grew up with a sick brother that was in and out of the hospital a lot. When I visited we often had fun doing art and playing games with volunteering groups. Now that I’m older, it’s nice to be able to give my time to something that brings other people joy, especially as I know the situations they’re in can be quite stressful and scary. I have a lot of fun doing art with the kids. They always make me laugh and they’re all very creative. I like knowing that the art room is somewhere they can come and feel comfortable expressing themselves."
– Amelia, Art Faciliator Volunteer
"My passion has always been helping others, and volunteering with RMHC presents a meaningful opportunity to give back to the community while also growing personally and emotionally. What I love about volunteering is seeing the smile on someone's face after I've helped them as it truly warms my heart."
– Leticia, Dinner Host Volunteer
"Volunteering at RMHC gives me the opportunity to care for and support families in need. I hope to use my time and energy to bring a little positive change. At RMHC there is an  atmosphere of warmth and support. Everyone is helping others in their own way, and every collaboration and every smile makes me deeply feel the meaning behind “giving”. When I see the children's happy faces and hear the parents' thanks, I feel that all the efforts are worthwhile. Volunteering has made me appreciate life more, and made me realize that even a small effort can bring great hope to others."
– Matthew, Dinner Host and Maintenance Volunteer
"I wanted to volunteer at RMHC to help support families and make their days a little easier and brighter when there is a sick child in the family. RMHC doesn’t just provide a place to stay – there are many thoughtful and practical support services that go alongside, truly making a difference for families when they need it most. My favourite thing about volunteering here is engaging with families, staff and other fellow volunteers. It’s such a rewarding experience."
– Adrienne, Family Room Volunteer
"My favourite thing about volunteering at RMHC is being able to make a difference in people's lives. I have a strong passion for giving back and helping others, and I believe that volunteering here not only allows me to contribute to a great cause but also helps me grow both personally and professionally. "
– Nonsikelelo, Reception Volunteer
"I love the thought that I'm able to help families in so many ways. It is so nice that a family can talk to me confidentially as someone different on their journey up to the hospital. I also love giving and sharing my time with families that are going through tough times. I wanted to volunteer with RMHC so I can give families worrying about how they will to get to the hospital for their appointments or to see their loved ones, one less thing to stress about."
– Kim, Shuttle Driver Volunteer

“Volunteering with RMHC is the most rewarding experience. For 12 years I have shared tears, laughter and miracles with so many families. This is a position that I feel privileged to have as part of my everyday life.”
– Heather, Reception Volunteer
"I love being in the Family Room for many reasons. Two of them being Chrissy and Niki (RMHC staff)! But overall I really enjoy being of some help and comfort to families who are going through so much. It is a very humbling experience for one who has been blessed throughout her life with minimal stumbling blocks and great happiness and it is an absolute joy to be able to give something back."
